Morgan Historic Register 23th of May Goodwood

Postby machiel kalf » Fri Dec 07, 2018 9:55 am

Dear All,

The 23th of May is the day that Brands Hatch Morgans organize their Annual Track Day. The Morgan Historic Register is invited, like last year and in 2005. In 2005 we organised A Tribute to Chris Lawrence.
But, next year we, the MHR has in mind to repeat this but with another title: "60 Years Lawrence Tune". Maybe "60 years" is an usual celebration moment........ If we wait longer, the people who were involved with this "interesting" Company, are no longer with us. To be honest, from my personal view, I am getting older as well.......... So, for me this is the last time I like to do this.

In cooperation with Peter Dodds, one of LT's old employees, I have made an invitation list. Made already a start with the invitations. At the moment I have 10 (!!) people from the past, some racing drivers and old employees who agreed to come. I don't give up and hope that many more like to come.
For those who own an older Morgan, doesn't matter if the car is Registered or not, please, let me know if you like to come to this day. All Morgans or other Lawrence Tune related cars are very welcome. Even the look a likes, and everybody who is interested, please, come to Goodwood. With some luck we can park the older Morgans, like this year, in the old pits and the paddocks nearby.

This is maybe the last opportunity to meet and talk with those people who made the history. Did you ever spoke with Len Bridge? He was one of the technicians who kept a sharp eye on "TOK" during Le Mans in 1961 and specific in 1962. Have you ever met Richard Shepherd Barron? Well, he promised me to come!

I hope to get the owner of one of the first ever built Aero8's. The owner of a Monica Saloon car promised to come. If you compare both cars under the skin, you should see who designed the front and rear suspension of those cars.

If you know someone who owns for example a Deep Sanderson sports car, type 301 or 302, please, ask him to come. With some luck the owners of a Deep Sanderson Formula Junior pops up, or what do you think about the "famous" Twinnie.

Any way, please, write the 23th of May in your agenda. Let me know if you like to come. We can have lunch in The Old Control Tower. The lady who runs the business must be informed about how people she can expect.
During the "brake" in lunchtime there is a very nice period to make photos if all the cars are parked on "the straight". After that there is time to do 1 or 2 laps on this famous circuit.

Many thanks to Brand Hatch Morgans!!!!

Best regards,

I think the Deep Sanderson 301 was raced at LMC by Robi Bernberg and Paul Ugo so you could ask them

Dear Machiel

A great idea if you can pull it off.
Do we need to register interest with Brands Hatch Motors at some stage.
I have sent you a separate email.

Regards

I came across this on autosport

"Production of the Mini Marcos began in limited numbers in 1965 as a kit car utilizing a fibreglass monocoque developed by Marcos fitted with the running gear & subframes from a BMC Mini. To promote the car, Jem Marsh of Marcos cars wanted to get an entry to Le Mans, but feared the chances of a UK team obtaining an entry for the Mini Marcos were all but non-existent. Marsh considered that a French team, with French drivers using a car assembled in France would have more chance of being accepted by the ACO. He therefore agreed to grant the distribution rights of the Mini Marcos to for Europe to Bill Dulles if a Le Mans entry was forthcoming. Dulles established Dulles Components Ltd to market the Mini Marcos on the Continent and in doing so secured an entry for Le Mans in 1966. They were able to procure a rally tuned 1,300cc engine in Monte Carlo Specification from BMC Abingdon’s Special Tuning Department, and went on to take an unlikely 15th placed finish in the 1966 race.

After the 1966 success, for 1967 Marcos decided to apply for a Le Mans entry in their own right. Although the entry was accepted, the car was rejected at scrutineering because the French scrutineers believed the windscreen was too low. They did not expect the small British team to modify the bodywork overnight, but that’s what they did and the car was accepted when re-presented to the scrutineers the following day.

During practice the Mini Marcos carried the race number #51, but for the race itself was re-numbered #50 following the non-qualification of another entry. Jem Marsh from Marcos chose to drive the car himself together with Chris Lawrence, and the pair were clocked at an impressive top speed of 227 kph (141 mph).

The #50 Mini Marcos started from 53rd and 2nd last position on the grid. In the first hour it gained 5 places, but unfortunately it completed only 13 laps before oil pump failure put paid to its hopes of repeating the 1966 result."

Perhaps this is why the Morgan (SLR?) disappeared from Le Mans history as Chris was otherwise engaged?

Dear John,

Do you or someone else know where to find this car? It would be great to see this car the 23th of May during the celebration of "60 years Lawrence Tune" at Goodwood. We, the MHR-team hopes to see as many as possible owners of older Morgans or cars tuned/ build by Lawrence Tune, that specific day.
At the moment we have 10 old LT-employees and 5 racing drivers from the past who promised to come. This is probably the last option to see/ speak with those people who created an interesting part of the racing history. Of course, with Morgans involved.

Dear John

Thanks for your message! Well, it's a pity. But, what can we do about it?

What I can tell you and maybe others are reading this as well: at the moment we have at least 10 names of old LT employees who promised me to come to Goodwood the 23th of May. 6 racing drivers who raced with Morgans from The Sixties promised to come! On top of that several other people who have a link with Lawrence Tune, because the own a Morgan with for example Lawrence Tune TR-engine or own another type of Lawrence Tuned car, confirmed to come to "60 years Lawrence Tune"!

Are you interested, (it's not necessary to have a Lawrence Tune related Morgan, please, let me know. There are no entry costs. (you have to pay your own lunch........ sorry) machielkalf@ziggo.nl
You are welcome from 10.00 am and can go what ever time you like.

Best regards, Machiel Kalf.

Hello everybody,

This is a last-minute reminder:

The Morgan Historic Register are meeting up at Goodwood Circuit this Thursday 23rd May 2019 anytime after 10 am - in conjunction with the Brands Hatch Morgans Track Day.

All are welcome MHR cars or not, and there is usually an opportunity to drive the circuit in your Morgan at lunchtime.

To coincide with this meeting Machiel Kalf has arranged a "60 Years of Lawrence Tune" celebration with some of the Lawrence Tune cars, LT employees, and racers.

No need to book, no entry fee, just turn up and bask in the shadow of the remarkable things Chris Lawrence and his dedicated band achieved.

Have Fun and hope to see you there.

Dear Andy,

Thanks for the announcement. It was a little bit disappointing that even people who promised to come, didn't come...........they missed a lot!! But, on the other hand, it was GREAT to see so many faces of people who are mentioned in for example Morgan books, but nobody knows who they are. Now they came to Goodwood and told their fantastic stories.

For me (an Ingrid) it was a fantastic to meet so many people who played a role in the history in Morgan(s), racing in The Sixties, and all the activities "Lawrence Tune" was involved! The cars from that time in combination with the drivers of that period was incredible. I/ we enjoyed it!! Oh, yes, and the weather was great as well!

Best regards and, again, thanks for your announcement,

Machiel.

Sorry that we couldn't be there Machiel, I explained to Andy that we had to keep an eye on our elderly border terrier who has been recovering from a spinal problem.
