Save the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight

Post by Chris Acklam »

I have been asked to draw your attention to the following petition :
We, the undersigned, Petition the Prime Minister to Ensure that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight is not axed in any defence cuts.
It has been suggested that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) - which celebrates the sacrifice of those who flew during the 2nd World War - will be cut in the next round of defence cuts. This will be a travesty if it was to go ahead.
The BBMF is said to cost a mere £3m a year, less than 0.1% of the defence budget.
It is a great delight for all who see their displays, and, if closed, the memory of 'The Few' will be lost. Please vote to ensure that the BBMF is not closed.

To add your name to the petition go to http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/BBMFCuts/

Chris,
Been there, done that!
They list the last 500 signatures added, but I only recognised one other name, a certain Mary Lindsay! I do hope that a few more familiar names will appear in the fullness of time.

So do I Bob, I am delighted to hear that you have added your name to this worthwhile cause. I did my bit by emailing as many people as I could and drawing their attention to the petition. Hopefully there will soon be a few more familiar names on it.

Too many historic aircraft have become museum pieces.

Thanks for flagging this one up - I had no idea that BBMF was under threat!

I have fond memories of being an Air Cadet, on camp at Conningsby (1986 I think), helping change oil filters and polishing up cockpit perspex on these fabulous aircraft (frankly I was probably cheap labour for the airman I was helping!). I think the benefits of National Pride are highly undervalued in this day and age.

Well thats taken my mind off the wait for the new season for a minute!! :)

Many thanks for bringing this to our attention. Both John and I have now signed up. The sight of the Battle of Britain Memorial flight is especially evocative for John as one of his uncles served as a rear gunner in Lancasters during the war. He survived the war despite volunteering for additional tours of duty (gaining the DSO (2 bars) in the process) but was sadly lost in the months after peace broke out whilst helping to transport nurses to Italy. His plane disappeared somewhere between the coast of southern France and Italy but no trace of it or any of the crew or passengers were ever found. A family tragedy that was harder for John's mother and grandparents to bear as there was no body to mourn or bury. Every time we see the BBMF we think of Uncle Jack.

Folks! This is a mis-direction of efforts. Sorry to say - "Petitions" are counted by The Government - whatever their "Colour" as 1 protest!

The action to take is for EVERYONE to write a seperate letter!

I am writing as an EX Member of the BBMF. I was with them 20 years ago - Great War birds Air Display; Farnborough, Bournemouth etc.

I thought that was just petitions which are delivered to Downing Street?
Surely if they host the petition themselves and can see how many names are there this must mean something?

Maybe not....

For those who did not append their monicker to the petition, I would advise that the government will not be cutting funding for the Battle of Britain Flight.

Maybe we did make a difference.
