Converting Series One track rod ends to ball end type

Postby Colin Bray » Mon Nov 05, 2018 6:32 pm

Some advice needed. With the ongoing wandering issue with my 1937 series one 4/4 I am considering changing the track rod ends to the later ball end type as used on the Plus 4 along with the tubular track rod. However, the Plus 4 ball ends are rather chunky and I am worried that with the tapered shaft there isn't a lot of meat left where it is bolted on to the end of the steering arm from the hub. Has anyone used ball ends from another car with a tubular track rod that a bit smaller for this conversion? If so, details please? Or is using Plus 4 track rod ends okay?

Have any owners out there of Series One 4/4s upgraded to a Plus 4 tubular track rod and ends? I thought this was a relatively common thing to do but maybe not.
