Booklands Double Twelve 5-6 June 2010

Post by John Clarke »

Brooklands Double Twelve is back! Nic Waller is keen to see a good Morgan entry

"We are keen to invite as many pre and post war Morgan motor cars into the
special class for Morgans. We still have a few places available. Charles
Morgan has kindly agreed to be there and serve as the class judge!"

I would love to hear from any Morgan owners who would like to enter this
prestigious event.

More information follows:

ENTRY APPLICATIONS CLOSE APRIL 30th

Hello

If you haven't already entered your car for the Brooklands Double Twelve, there
are still a few more weeks to go until the class lists close. I am delighted
that we already have some great cars entered for this competitive and fun event
and am really looking forward to June 5th and 6th when the Double Twelve returns
to Brooklands.

There will be 144 cars in total, 12 in each of the 12 classes, invited to
compete in the combined Double Twelve Driving Tests and Concours competition in
and around the Museum site over the weekend. A new feature this year will be to
incorporate some of the original Campbell Mountain Circuit in to the driving
tests. There will be more about this when the full test details are announced.

In addition to the established Grand Touring, Edwardian, Veteran and Historic
Brooklands classes that featured in the 2008 Double Twelve event there are
several new categories for 2010. These include Morgan three and four wheelers, a
centenary celebration of Alfa Romeo, a 75th anniversary celebration of the first
Jaguar, Anglo American V8 engined cars and a special class for Minis and Mini
based vehicles.

All twelve classes will take part in the Driving Tests based on the 1939 Junior
Car Club Rally held at Brooklands and will have their vehicles judged in the
Concours d'Elegance. The Tests will take place on Saturday and Sunday and there
will also be an opportunity to drive the Mercedes-Benz World circuit during the
weekend. Judging for the Concours will be on the Sunday. In addition, on the
Saturday, there will be over 100 Pre-war cars taking part in the Brooklands
Speed Trials organised by The Vintage Sports-Car Club on the Mercedes-Benz World
circuit. This event will have a separate class structure based on type and
capacity.

It all promises to be a great weekend and I really hope that you will be a part
of it this year. The event organisers, The Brooklands Museum, a registered
charity founded in 1987, is home to the world's first purpose-built motor racing
circuit which opened in 1907. In support of the charity there will be
a competitors entry fee of £100 per car. This will include entry for your car,
driver and passenger and includes entrant hospitality. Brooklands is a magical
place where motoring history was made before the war and the Double Twelve was
one of motor racings 'crown jewel' races with competitors coming from all over
the world to drive in the 24 hour race over the two days. Further information
about Brooklands can be obtained from its website, [1]www.brooklandsmuseum.com.
Accomodation is available at many local hotels including the newly opened
Brooklands Hotel. [2]www.brooklandshotelsurrey.com

Please click on the link below to see the classes for cars that we are inviting
to take part in June 2010 and fill out and return the application form as soon
as possible. We will only be inviting 12 cars for each of the 12 classes so in
order to make sure of your place an early response is advised. Any car owners
who wish to discuss any event details or their own car entry should telephone me
on +44 (0)787 551 6817 or email me at [3]nic.waller1@virgin.net I look forward
to hearing from you soon.

I've entered my car and hopefully there will be a few more series 1s to play with!

Entries for the Morgan Class at the Double Twelve are now published. They are:

Doug Hill in KPH
John Sparrowe in JUO
Me in my 4-4
Jeff Stowe in his beautiful '59 +4 DHC
an anonymous 3 wheeler...and
Jo Moss in a '75 +8

Charles Morgan will be judging the concours and a royalty chap will be presenting the prizes. Shame that FXD and CAB haven't entered....but still a nice line up of historic cars. The total entry is 149 cars ranging from a 1902 Dennis Tonneau (driven by a chap called.....Dennis!!!) to a 1991 AC Cobra.

Competition is on Saturday and Sunday so anyone planning to spectate please come and say hello (and look the other way as I go round the cones the wrong way). Did I mention I suffer from cone blindness......(getting my excuses in early).

John,

The trouble with the summer months is that there are too many motoring events to choose from (unlike the winter) so whilst CAB remains at home unable to get to Brooklands I will be at Monza. If only Morgan drivers could be in two places at once #-o

John,
Just so that you do not feel homesick, I have asked my cousin Roberto Toro of Radio Italiano to keep an eye out for you. Big fellow he is.

I'll be in the SS with a big number 21 on the side. The 4-4 is well and truly bust! I will wait for the shadow.

The Brooklands Double Twelve has been and gone. Its name is derived from the JCC 24 hour race of the 1930s. Due to a retriction of night time racing, the race was split into two 12 hour daylight races, hence the name Double Twelve.

The modern event couldn't have been more removed from the '30s race. The VSCC had organised a sprint on the Saturday but for some obscure reason, this did not form part of the Double Twelve. The event was restricted to a driving test and concours spread over two days. There was not much adrenalin in evidence!!!

The organisers had seen fit to create a class for Morgans of all ages. With my Series 1 in bits, I substituted my racing +4SS - with the concours in mind, I even managed to clean the underside of the bonnet!!

Series 1's were restricted to John Sparrowe in 'JUO' and Doug Hill in 'KPH'.

Jeff Stowe brought his fabulous +4 coupe and his ex McDonald racing +4. Jo Moss brought her 4-speed +8 (although now with 5 speed) which completed the Morgan class.

Saturday turned out sunny and dry with Brooklands remaining true to it's "right crowd and no crowding". Some fabulous machinery assembled in the paddock including Classic Car boys Simon Taylor and his Derby Bentley and Mick Walsh in his Lea Francis. Best car was an amazing pre war Alfa Romeo with 6 cylinder engine and central driving position. There was a profusion of Jags from D Type to XJ200 amongst the 100+ entry.

The 5 driving tests were fun though all over in minutes leaving the rest of the day to wander round and sample the excellent hospitality. The tests were driving round cones in and around the terrible surfaces of the old Brooklands track. The published results seem to indicate that Jeff had nailed it at the end of day 1.

Day 2 was also mercifully dry and Charles Morgan arrived to judge the concours element. The results were not given at the time but for me it was a toss up between JUO and Jeffs coupe.

There was then plenty of time to do the two remaining driving tests and to kick our heels in the hospitality tent eating more cake. Again, there were very few spectators - the army of traders must have wondered why they had bothered.

After what seemed to be an age, the results were anounced with the Morgan class top three being Jo Moss, John Sparrowe and Jeff Stowe. HRH Prince Michael of Kent presented the award to Jo - quite fitting as it happened to be her birthday!! So ended a rather dragged out weekend.

Here's Jeff in John Sparrowe's grand fathers original 50's helmet (no body else could get it on!!)

and heres KPH...Doug drove up from the New Forest on the Saturday but decided not to return on the Sunday
