Last time a Series 1 won a race outright?

Post by simon king »

Hi All,

the week before last I got very lucky with the weather (rain) and a handicapper having no history for me running the series 1 at Oulton Park. The result being that I won the VSCC 4 lap handicap race for pre-war sports cars on the International circuit. This got me thinking, prior to my good fortune, when was the last time a Series 1 Morgan actually won a mixed marque race outright and not simply a class or performance index type win?

I had a similar experience in 1970 when I entered my Series One in an all-comers handicap race at Bentley Drivers Club Silverstone and the handicapper was so sure that a woman in her first race would not be competitive that he gave me a very favourable handicap and I came second, (just behind the Aston Martin going out of shot) - not as impressive as your win though!
The blue Plus 8 was driven by Adam Bridgland.

Congratulations Simon - an excellent win.

You had me searching though my files and certainly in the modern era it is a fair claim.

Jeff Sparrowe had a number of wins, I think the following were outright - but we need to check.

15th April 1950 Lulsgate 1100cc race
8th July 1950 Castle Combe 1100cc race
12th April 1952 Castle Combe 1100cc race

Class wins are another topic.

Tony, Richard and Leigh won Le Mans Classic in 2008 on handicap with team 66 in my old car. Not the same as winning the individual handicap but Keith and I (and the others) took home a huge trophy.

Thanks Bob but that race (again a handicap) wasn’t a Series 1
I know all Morgans look the same……
