Thank you Bob - great photos as usual.

Not only good action shots from the competitors point of view but also good clear images of the car so you can pick out all the details.

For instance no doubt you noticed that the petrol filling cap is in the later (current) position.

Normally a 'bustle back' would have the filler on the top in the centre of the back panel. A throwback to the earlier twin spare days and the position of the petrol tank.

I am still mithering over that 1960 build date...?!

Cheers

Mark

Images of the Pom in 1980 in Collectors' Car.

Some very interesting cars including the Plus 4s of Messrs Bob Northover (number 19 and John Smith number 20). They glance over at the overtaking vehicle in disdain and disbelief. Both Bob and John still own their very original cars.

John Lindsay was also driving the Plus 8 in the Pom that year.

Hello Mark,
Trust you are well and the early +4 rebuild is progressing.

I was interested to see Bob Bulls' photos of the 1960 +4, UUX 209. Nice clear pictures.

Yes, like you I am slightly confused by the year of the car and the reference to being a "bustle back". I have a 1956 "bustle back" and my understanding is the term was used to describe the +4 model between April 1954 and October 1958, the former date being after the flat radiator/interim radiator models and the latter date being the introduction of the single spare wheel on the rear sloping panel. I stand to be corrected of course about the dates.

Chassis number might provide clarity and I suppose there is always the possibility a bustle back body was put on a later car.

Could the fuel filler cap be where it is for racing, and I wonder what power unit is driving the car. Mine is a TR2 unit although Morgan had already started using TR3 units....the usual mix and no clear cut off dates.

cheers,

Eddie Singleton.

The car is listed as having a 2138cc engine. The driver, Edward Harvey, had a novice cross on the car, and is presumably a member of the VSCC. Are there any older Morgan drivers named Harvey. as I think he is quite a young chap?

While watching the event I was puzzled by the positioning of the filler cap on the car. "Surely"' I thought to myself, "that can't be true Bustle back if it is dated as 1960!"

Ever since returning from the event I have been thumbing through my vast collection of Morgan literature endeavouring to solve the mystery, but to-date I am still flummoxed.

My fear is that unscrupulous types are producing dodgy replicas to sell on E.Bay. I would advise anyone answering an add there to be extra cautious.

Bob- it was the drivers first race. His Dad used to race with Mary in the 1980's in this car.

For the benefit of the historians - John Smith's car is chassis number 3000 and was the first cowled-in Morgan. Built in 1953, it was fitted with an experimental TR engine (X540 I believe) although the car no longer has that engine. It was exported to Rhodesia from new and later returned to the UK to be registered VCR 352 in 1955.

I've never raced a three wheeler.

However, Mike Duncan (all 6 feet 8 inches of him) has, as this picture shows.

There was a Brian Harvey that raced a lurid green +8 and also a rather hot 4/4

Yes, He had a prang at Snetterton on the pit straight I remember. I have a photo somewhere.

Can't say I remember him racing a Plus 4.
