Racing in Oz Round the Houses

Post by John Clarke »

While you guys were racing around Snet, I attended the Northam Flying 50. They close the roads, bung up a few concrete barriers and get on with it.

Phil Brown, a former racer in the Challenge and now living in North Perth, Australia , last year sent me the two images above saying:

"The photos show the results of my brief encounter with street racing. I was competing in the Northem Flying Fifty, a recreation of the the town races the used to hold in 30s, 40s and 50s. The event is regularity but is fast. My class was full of Mustangs, Galaxies and Falcons which was quite intimidating. I made contact with the concrete wall. Two severely chipped wheels, two wings, bent chassis and cross head. The car made it the 120 ks home under its own steam and repairs are almost complete now. Not the best way to make it onto the cover of a magazine."

A year on and Phil's moss box +8 is all back together and went back to Northam with the local Morgan group. I tagged along in Sarah's FIAT (!).

John, have you come across GEAR in your travels? I believe it is Golden Era Auto Racing or some such. It is much like the 'races' you describe, non-competitive, and gentlemanly. If so and you come a cross an Arthur Babbington, or a Greg Mackie, tell them Bob says hello.

Trust you are all well and enjoying the Antipodean experience,

Kind regards,

Bob,
Ace Photograp…… you know!
