Pomeroy Trophy 2008

Post by Bob Bull »

You can see photos from the Pom on the picasaweb.google.co.uk/rbmapics site. While the Morgans were easily identifiable the Vauxhall of Tony Lees somehow remained anonymous and despite my best efforts managed to hide from my lense, however, Mark and Tim were less circumspect and have been captured in all their glory. I have no idea who won the Trophy but no doubt all will be revealed in the fullness of time. I can say that the Mogs did seem to give a good account of themselves. Listeners to BBC Three Counties (plug) may well be able to hear the dulcet tone of Tim on Tuesday evening expounding on his career and plans for the future.
Nice to meet a few of the 'names' that appear on the site including Simon Baines and his hat.
Highlight of the day was undoubtedly the second 40 Minute High Speed Trial in which Robert Barrie, Porsche 911 and Simon Diffey in an ex-Malcolm Wilson Escort completely lost the plot and went at it hammer-and-tongs for the entire distance, rarely more than a couple of lengths apart and more frequently side-by-side, as if some major title was at stake. Well done to both of them it was all good clean fun.
I will get Chris to add some additional Morgan shots to the exisiting site if he will.

Thanks to Tim and Mark for not running away.

The Pomeroy Trophy is probably the only VSCC event that allows any age of 4 wheeled vehicle to enter. The idea is to find the best Grand Touring car.
Vehicles ranged this year from Tony Lees' magnificent Vauxhall Viper (with its appetite for expensive fluids - petrol and oil)to an Audi RS4 estate car that smoked its brakes and ate tyres at an alarming rate.

I'm not sure if I will ever fathom out what would constitute an ideal car to win the "Pom" in - as the number of laps that have to be completed in the high speed trial is based on a formula that includes the number of braked wheels multiplied by a factor, part of which the distance from the brake pedal to the rear axle (In inches)!!!

Thanks to Bob Bull for putting me on the spot

Cheers
Tim

The VSCC have issued a PROVISIONAL result for the POM, but stress it is provisional, they show Patrick Blakeney-Edwards as having won the Pomeroy Trophy in a Frazer Nash (1928 Model) and Dudley Sterry winning the Densham in his HRS Sports (1939). Mark G-S lies 13th with a 2nd class award and Tim Hill 15th also with a 2nd. Timothy Richards finished 19th with a 3rd class award. Tony Lees finished ........... I'll say no more. There were 97 entries so the boys done well.

Hi Bob,
Sorry I missed you at the "event of the year".
I can't understand how you managed to miss the Viper? ;-)
Image
Sadly its appetite for fluids was more than matched by what seems to be a habit for eating metal - 3rd gear (brand new a month ago) was destroyed in 10 laps leading to a rather early bath.
Great fun while it lasted tho'.
Good to see the Mogs doing so well.
Cheers, Tony

So are there two Vauxhall Vipers competing currently? I was talking to an Aussie chap who was driving one at VSCC Loton Park last year.
PS Other good photos on VSCC site.

Tony,
How COULD I have missed you? Well in my ignorance I was looking for a 30/98!! Obviously not too hot on my Vauxhalls.
It would have been nice to have said hello, but I am sure thre will be other opportunities over the year. By the way, the results are only provisional so perhaps we should not write you off just yet.

Regards,

Bob

'tis one and the same car. He sold it to me so he could fund his 27 litre monster!

Aussie? No way, I am and always have been a Kiwi! Tony is getting very useful with the Viper now and won his class at Curborough a week ago in very wet conditions - it is a fast car but you need bravery and a lot of skill to get the best out of it, not to mention patience for all the days when the 80+ year old components decide that one of them needs a rest. I broke my baby car at Wiscombe on Sunday but Tony was getting his time down to a very respectable figure when we left at lunchtime. The 27 litre car won't be out for a bit yet but I have just bought another running aero car so that I have something to play with in the meantime.

There were some 3 wheel Morgans in action at Wiscombe but I did not see any 4 wheelers.
