Sealing split rims

Post by mike culmer »

I have a leak on a newly acquired Image split rim wheel. (bought second hand)

What is the best way to reseal the rims? I'm prepared to split them but was wondering is silicon sealent was OK to use or is there a proper seal between the rims?

Thanks
Mike

Oh Mike ... the wonders of quality Image wheels !

You can try taking the tyre off and resealing over the area between inner, outer rim and wheel centre with clear silicone (Screwfix !) Image just seam to wack a whole load of silicone here.
At least if you seal this point , no air can get out through the bolts.

Might be worth checking that the valve is not leaking first ... pump it up and stick it in a tub of water or dribble it over the valve .. you should see air bubbles if its leaking !

standard silicone contains a lot of acetic acid and it will attack the aluminium . there is a product used by the tyre industry called rim stick used for sealing leaky tyre beads . For utmost saftey take it back to immage for them to reseal.

you need to strip and check sealing face we regularly see ones where some one has split them using a screw driver and damaged seal then just blobbed over with silicon and sold them if the mating surfaces are OK a thin smear of sikaflex a 3m product works for us or we have to tig up the damage and skim flat in the lathe then seal

Thanks all!

I'll check for obvious leaks around the valves and if none found I'll strip and re seal as suggested.

Wheel manufacturers use and sell an item called a rim band. When they are compromised, like yours, they are replaced. I suggest you use that.
