+4 Coupe steering wheel 1963

Post by Robin Singleton »

Does anyone know what size of Bluemells steering wheel would have been used in a 1963 +4 Coupe. Mine has a 17 inch one which comes very close to the forward opening door.

Morning Robin,

I measured my Bluemel Brooklands steering wheel when I got home last night - and it is 17 inches diameter as you say.

You could of course fit a smaller diameter Moto-Lita wheel but I seem to remember that in period the big wheel was fitted as standard on the DHC.

John Emberson has one and so too does Jeff Stow so you could always PM them and ask.

Have a happy Christmas and look forward to seeing the DHC on the road in 2012!

Cheers

Dear Robin,

Yes, you are right, In the past they used the Bluemel steering wheels, but another option in that period was a Walsall steering wheel. That's an aluminium wheel with 3 "spokes" and a wooden rim. They quality wasn't "fantastic" and they are very rare. In one of the spokes there is a stamped logo of the Walsaal Company. This company stil excist in, yes, Walsall! Do you have a Bluemel steering wheel with an ivory rim?

Best regards, Machiel Kalf.

Hi Machial

Many thanks. Have fitted the 17 inch black wheel which despite my worries works surprisingly well!

Interesting to hear about the Walsall steering wheel ...haven't seen one, and didn't know about them till now.

Best wishes

Nor me!

Show us a picture Robin of how good she looks with the Brooklands wheel on...

Was it on or with the car when you had it? I can't remember.

But I do know it was almost exactly 6 years to the week that I went down to the Docks at Chatham to pick her up. Literally - you had never seen so many boxes piled up on her!

I can't believe the time has flown by so quickly.

Cheers

Hi Mark and Machiel

Just been researching the Walsall Steering Wheel Company. I think the reason we have not heard about them is that the wheels were marketed under quite a few better known names, Nardi, Les Leston, Paddy Hopkirk, Jackie Stewart, and many others.

I will try to upload some photos of the Coupe, although uploading photos to a site is for me likely to be more difficult than a +4 Coupe full rebuild. I'll ask Sarah for help.

The Blumells steering wheel was a Christmas present a couple of years ago.......there was no wheel with the car. I'll try to get the photos uploaded before this Christmas

Cheers

Very nice but you need to adjust the code to this so that we can see it (the second square bracket is in the wrong place….)

WOW! It looks beautiful.

I always wanted one - now I wish I hadn't sold it. Mind you it wasn't in that condition was it Robin when I did...

Seasons greetings to the Singletons too.

Three Cheers

Robin,
That looks fantastic and a long way from what I saw at Marks a few years ago and the photo of when it was green with beige trim on a drive way in Solihul about thirty five years agol!! Many congratulations on the rebuild.
