Lawrencetune Badges Wanted

Post by Andy Downes »

Hello Everybody,

I am trying to help someone re-building a genuine Lawrencetune car from the 1960s - he is looking for two of the enamel Lawrenctune Racing badges (the ones about the size of 'car badges' i.e. 3").

I seem to remember Melvyn Rutter selling some a while back - anyone know of any for sale please ?

Many Thanks

Andy

Hello Andy,
There is a modern Lawrence Tune website, selling badges for £50 a go.
www.lawrence-tune.co.uk, I think.
With very best wishes,

Thanks Andrew,

I'm aware of that website, it was Chris Lawrence's own site I think but not sure of its viability at present.

Thanks anyway.

I seem to remember that Terry Foxon at GEE had some when I was there a while ago.

Hi Andy,

Try Brett at Brands Hatch Morgans.

Hello again, Andy. Some months ago there were badges still available from the chap who has the website. Try writing an e-mail to sales@lawrence-tune.co.uk. I doubt that you'll receive an immediate reply, but might be worth the wait if you are unable to find the badges elsewhere. The firm that deals with the parts works out of Basingstoke. Best wishes, Andrew

Thanks for all your comments.

The guy I was helping now has two from the lawrence-tune website - slow but now in his sticky fingers !

The car by the way is the Lawrencetune/Blydenstein Vaukhall VX/490 Reg 812 FNM - which did well in the European long-distance championship in 1963, then it went rallying for a year with the Cooper brothers. It was found in very original condition recently complete with Lawrence's trademark 42 DCOE Webers and special alloy LT inlet manifolds - now being rebuilt and will be back on the historic circuits next year to mark it's 40th anniversary. It also raced at Goodwood in 1963.

I'll post a picture later.

Thanks for letting us know Andy - Machiel Kalf will be particularly interested to hear about it.

Now you mention it I seem to remember it being offered for sale about a year or so ago in quite poor but original condition. I never realised or knew of its Lawrence connection.

Do you think it will be allowed in the 4 cylinder race at BDC Silverstone next year ?!!!

Cheers

Hello Mark,

Good to hear from you !

Actually it was Machiel Kalf who asked me if I could help - between us we are collating everything we can find about Lawrencetune and Chris Lawrence, the sheer volume and diversity of what he did is truly amazing.

He also had some serious failings, try reading Gordon Spice's autobiography for an example !

Yes I see what you mean Andy! I don't seem to be able to see the 6 point ROPS!

I am familiar with Gordon Spices' reservations! Bill Blydenstein also raced Morgans with Chris and Gordon sharing them in the longer 2 driver races in period.

Has the Vauxhall stayed in this country and will we see it out on the circuits sometime in the future?

Cheers

Mark,

The Vauxhall VX/490 is staying in the UK.

It is being restored/prepared for Historic racing in 2013 as we speak - apparently the period cylinder head is a work of art inside :o These cars ran at Goodwood in 1963 so hopefully see it there next year...

There was also another VX/490 running in period under the banner of "Team Tourist Trophy" they were both successful.

You are correct Bill Blydenstein did race with Chris in Morgans, mainly in 1963, I have a magazine article by him about it.
