1960’s Plus 8 etc. Brake Callipers and Calliper Carriers
I am seeking a pair of original type fitment Girling Type 16 callipers and calliper carriers.
I have a pair of Wilwood 4 pot lightweight alloy callipers and calliper carriers modified to suit. As removed from a successful competition car recently re-imported from the USA.
Please can anyone sell me these parts or happy to swap the parts I have for the parts I need.
Cheers,
Jim Lowry.

Hi Jim.
Thanks for the help, I will call and ask.
I think the Girling Type 16 callipers may be a common fitment to some other car makes and models, but I am begining to think those fitted to a Morgan may differ to other type 16 callipers.
The calliper carriers are peculiar to a Morgan and are likely to be the harder part to find.
Cheers

What do you want to fit these to Jim?
Plus 8 or Plus 4?
Plus 8 or Plus 4?
Re: 1960’s Plus 8 etc. Brake Callipers and Calliper Carriers
Hi Mary.
It is a 1960 Plus 4 which was until recently raced in the USA fitted with Alloy 4 pot Wilwood callipers, the calliper carriers were suitably modified to accept the much wider stud fixing of these callipers. Even so, being a historic car the wire wheel hubs and brake discs remained as per original.
I have bought new Plus 4 discs and new wire wheel hubs and had the hubs machined to accept larger wheel bearings for what I understand and have learnt are competition type stub axles.
I then borrowed a calliper carrier from another early 1960's Plus 4 and unsuccessfully tried to trial fit a type 16 calliper taken from a Triumph TR4 . . . . . Mmmmmm ? . . . . . . . . . . Doesn't fit - wrong spacing for the calliper securing bolts.
Richard Plant has kindly measured his own Moss box Plus 8 and it would appear that Morgans were fitted with a Type 16 calliper using a 3.25 inch bolt spacing, whereas other Type 16 callipers appear to be 3.5 inch.
Type 16 callipers are now being remanufactured but it would appear only with the 3.5 inch spacing.
Original Morgan Type 16 callipers only appear to be available on a reconditioned / exchange basis, I have none to exchange.
Interestingly, the original "borrowed" Type 14 calliper carrier has also the 3.25 inch spacing and so I am thinking a similar dimensioned carrier may have fitted from early disc brake Plus 4 cars through to much later 1978 or so Plus 8 cars. Melvyn Rutter’s catalogue lists several part numbers with differing thread sizes.

And so, what I am seeking is a pair of calliper carriers and a pair of Type 16 callipers to fit them.
I would presume a set of parts from a 1968-78 Plus 8 would be ideal despite the slightly beefier Plus 8 discs, and I was thinking that maybe someone might be wanting to upgrade their production specification brakes and may be able to use my Wilwood set up in exchange.

Yesterday I noticed on Ebay a supplier of Morgan Plus 8 callipers at £99 each including VAT and P+P. I have written to the seller asking if they are original or reproduction parts, and to confirm the spacing of the attachment bolt centres. If they are 3.25 inches, I may then only be needing the carriers and at least I will know the dimensions required and can then make a drawing to send to some specialist companies. Melvyn Rutter’s selection may be able to offer the final part of the jigsaw.
Hope this all makes sense and all readers have managed to stay awake whilst reading.
Cheers,
Jim.
PS – how many “L”s in calliper / caliper.

Re: 1960’s Plus 8 etc. Brake Callipers and Calliper Carriers
Hi Jim,
I had the same problem with the Black car...
Brian Gateson from Techniques supplied the brakes etc but in the end it was Mark Baldwin at the Factory who supplied the calliper brackets and made it all fit together.
That was in 'the good old days'...! Whether Mark and the Factory would be so helpful now I don't know. But if you don't ask...
Cheers
Mark
