'Holly' Birkett 6-Hour Relay Results Archive

Post by Andy Downes »

Having been Team Manager at so many Birkett Relays I have decided that it would be worth documenting the various Teams and their Results, for interest and posterity. So over the coming weeks I will work through my records and build up a list of what I have, I know Mary has lots of stuff too but all other contributions are welcome. The MSCC already had a fine record at the Birkett long before Mary Lindsay thrust me into its clutches, it may turn out to be a long list but hopefully you will find it interesting and worthwhile.

Have Fun

Mark I dragged out my old schoolboy scrapbook, and found the results of the 1951 Birkett, which I posted, I now see that Andy has them in his record.
Did I miss them or has he added them since?

Certainly NOT trying to be a 'cocky dick'.

Bob.

Andy,
News from down under and perhaps something to add to your archive. I have on my very small trophy shelf a class win goblet from the six hour. I remember going to the Silverstone Club House on the outside of Woodcote with Richard Casswell on a very dark Saturday night prior to going to the Sarasin's Head in Toecster (?). I believe the team was Mary, Leigh, Jim Deacon, Peter Deans, Richard Casswell and me as reserve and Terry Howes as team Manager. I think this was the occasion when Peter Deans came into the Pitts with a width nose and wing from a Mallock attached to the two tail pipes of his Plus 8. I also remember being overtaken by Jonathan Palmer in a Lola Aston Martin on the club straight. The year ? 198? 1 2 or 3.
Incidentally Jim Deacons Plus 8 (GAB ) has turned up here in Perth and I will view it shortly.

1983 – VMO
1984 – VMO
1986 – VMO (No 20C)
1987 – VMO

1999 – Black Sheep (6hrs at Snett which I think we won)

2006 – Black Sheep
2010 – Black Sheep
2011 – Black Sheep
2012 – Black Sheep (though entry shows 4/4 4str - VMO)

Hi Andy
yep - can confirm Morgan team won on handicap in 1999 - apparently the throttle jammed fully open on Black Sheep, drove lap and a half on the ignition key #-o so that we did not make an time loosing unannounced pit stop
Happy days

Hi Andy

Here's my 3 penneth from my files - all at Snet in 'proper' +4s at the 6 hour Birkett:

1996 "The Wrong Trousers" Morgan +4 Team

Team Captain: Pete Mountain
Garage Man: Brian Gateson

Jan Bulinski Morgan +4 'Choc Ices'
Jim Deacon Morgan +4 SS
John Clarke Morgan +4 SS
Matt Taylerson Morgan +4 (VON 777)
Stephen Locket Morgan +4 (Fiat Twin Cam)

Finished 33rd overall out of 40; 34th on handicap. Weather dry, sunny, cold

Reversing off the trailer, Jim's head gasket blew and was out. Matt's axle cried enough after one session, Stephen's engine expired in his first session leaving Jan and I to do the bulk of the Birkett as a duo.

1997 "The Right Trousers" Morgan +4 Team

Team Captain: Pete Mountain
Garage Man: Brian Gateson

Jan Bulinski Morgan +4 'Choc Ices'
Peter Seargent Morgan +4
John Clarke Morgan +4 SS
Matt Taylerson Morgan +4 (VON 777)
Chris Dady Morgan +4 (Fiat twin cam

Finished 25th overall out of 41; 29th on handicap. Weather very cold (ice)

Jan broke his rocker shaft at end of 1st stint and retired, all other cars fine. Notably, beat +8 team for the 1st time.

1999 "+4+'s" Morgan +4 Team

Team Manager: Doug Taylerson
Garage Man: Brian Gateson

John Clarke Morgan +4 SS
Matt Taylerson Morgan +4 (VON 777)
Barry Sumner Morgan +4 (Flat Rad V8)
Jack Bellinger Morgan 4/4
Tony Howard Morgan +4 SLR - DNS
Chris Dady Morgan +4 (Fiat Twin Cam) - DNS

Finished 9th overall out of 38; 1st on handicap (first win by a Morgan team since 1959 where VON 777 was team member). Weather appalling - very, very wet.

Barry managed 3 laps before retiring with water pump and throttle issues, remaining 3 cars complete the event.

Proud Winners

2000 "+4+" Morgan +4 Team Birkett 12 Hour Race held in June

Team Manager Doug Taylerson

Matt Taylerson Morgan +4 (VON 777)
John Clarke Morgan +4 SS
David James Morgan +4
Peter Seargent Morgan +4
Jan Bulinski Morgan +4 (Choc Ices)
Barry Sumner Morgan +4 (Flat Rad but not V8)

Image
Proper +4s

Finished 9th overall and 9th on handicap (how many teams entered? anyone???). Weather as one would expect in June - warm for Snet, windy.

Image
Proper broken +4s

Barry retired after a couple of laps with head gasket problems, David after 7 laps on 3 cylinders, Jan dumped oil all over the track late on and retired. 3 cars standing at the end. This brought to an end proper +4's contesting the Birkett..........or is it???

Thanks John, great pictures and recollections - I was hoping someone would fill in the missing 'wrong trouser' years !

I must however pick up on your statement your statement "1st on handicap (first win by a Morgan team since 1959", Morgans won in 1978  and possibly in 1973, though Mary assures me they didn't win in 1974 despite what some of the books say.

If you're coming to the Birkett tomorrow, please bring me a copy of your book and I'll pay you in cash.

Many Thanks

Hi Andy

I'm sure you're correct - I was quoting from Doug's write up at the time (that's my excuse!!!)

Good luck with the Birkett tomorrow - hopefully the weather will be kind. Sorry I can't make it - booked to see the mighty Wycombe (Leigh will understand). I've put a book aside for you by the way. Only a handful left now....hooray!

cheers

OK Thanks John,

I didn't realise Leigh supported Wycombe too ! - a bit of a trek for him, Ipswich would surely be closer for him.

Now John says we won in 1998, and his description of Black Sheep having throttle problems is correct (don't have throttle problems twice its not recommended) vaguely recall it being wet!
But I have a trophy that's dated 24.10.99 - Snett - 1st team on handicap. cannot believe we won two years in a row!!! :?
