Morgans Down Under

Post by Bob Bull »

I have heard from Greg Mackie, and he is progressing (at last) work on his restoration job;

The car has a quick (probably illegal) trip 'down the road' and is now off to the trimmer, after which the mud guards will be fitted. No doubt mark and/or Machiel will have something to say about the project. Me? I have not a clue, merely a reporter of fact.

Yes it does look good.

Bet you are eyeing up those wheels...!

Cheers

I was at Goodwood Revival yesterday and saw a 1930's saloon car (a Salmson?) with wheels that looked very similar to the Easi-Clean wheels you Series 1 racing boys covert.

I am sure this is a silly question but surely those wheels were not just made for the Morgan Motor Co.

The whole ethos of HFS was to use proprietary parts where possible to keep the costs down.

Answers on a postcard to...

I was surprised to see two Easiclean wheels (four stud) at Beaulieu (one marked up 'as for Morgan?'), but both had 4.5" PCD when measured.
The six stud Easicleans frequently on eBay are for Morris 8 S2 cars, if not others.
I had a discussion with a S1 owner about the reality of swapping the outer rim of a damaged Morgan wheel with one off a Morris. Removing the twelve? rivets is the least of the issues, the two parts of the wheel are so well pressed together the rivets do little.
The person who achieved it said he would NEVER do it again.

That's interesting [or perhaps not]. My wheel PCD measures 130mm - same as 4-stud VW wheels!

Up=Date on Greg Mackie''s Morgan

Post by Bob Bull »

Our Antipodean friend Greg has sent me an up-date on his re-build, along with a couple of pictures for those interested in old Morgans. It is awaiting the attentions of a trimmer to be complete, and very nice it looks too,

No doubt Mark will be wanting a detailed history.

Thanks Greg, good of you to keep us clued in.

Love to V.

There are surprisingly a number of Series 1's down under as can be seen on the Morgan Club Of Australia's web site

http://www.morganownersclub.com.au/series1.html.

Even my close neighbor has one

Most are being driven all year round although now (in the cooler months) is best suited to the siphonic cooling systems!

More series 1 attending the Morgan Diamond Muster in Bathurst NSW over the week end.

Talking with John Merton, he is convinced that all pre war four fours were designated 4/4 and not 4-4. Hmmm, I will have to amend my book!

As an aside, check out all those easi clean wheels. I have wind of 4 spare easi cleans languishing in a shed in NSW that maybe up for grabs?

Cheers

Re John Merton's belief that ALL pre-war 4 wheeled Morgans were designated 4/4 and not 4-4s. He makes a very good case and I agree with him. I argued the case with the Morgan Historic Register who listed my car as a 4-4. They have now decided all pre 1937 4/4s are 4-4s just to keep me happy I guess! All those '4-4' owners had better grind off the '4/4' on the castings of their bell housings......

Concerning Series One wheels. Mike Anthony, a long time Series One enthusiast in California and an ex-pat, told me he had heard a story that HFS Morgan probably got the original wheels from the British Salmson company when they decided not to go ahead with a proposed model in the mid 1930s. The suggestion being that HFS was always looking for a way to keep costs down.
