Car history

Post by Mary Lindsay »

Does anyone have any information about previous history or owners of a red 1978 Plus 8 reg. KUY 743T?
It has all the hallmarks of having been raced in the past. The new owner is seeking some history.

Mary,

The car was raced by Tom Hinds in the one circuit special GT championship at Castle Combe, it won its class in 1984, the championship was won overall by Rob Cox-Allison in a Lotus Elan.

Regards

Richard.

I saw that car in the recnt RT ads and did wonder. If it is the car raced by Hinds I recall that it had a very active life for a year or two being raced a lot by Hinds and I think it was Fred Campbell and I think it was fairly modded (at least current Class B spec). I probaly have some reults sheets somewhere

Richard, thank you for that information, do you have any press cuttings or race programmes/results from that time?

Leigh, also very helpful thank you. If you could rustle up some information that would be great. You might be interested to know that the new owner is none other than the Anglemog stalwart of many years ago, Bob Fawkes ( a former owner of well known Plus 4 XOV).

Hi Mary,

Sorry I haven’t got any further info on the car other than a long memory for number plates however there is a photograph of the car on page 203 in Chris Harvey’s book “Morgan the last survivor” the one with XOV on the front page!! I also remember seeing the car racing in period at Castle Combe. I am sure you would have the book as there is a lovely picture of you in JEK lifting a wheel on the Kimber Trial in 1985 on page 206.

Will the car come out to race again :?:

Regards

Richard.

Well spotted Richard, I do have the book and have found the photograph on page 203, thanks.

You need to look again at the front cover of the book though - it is a green flat rad reg. no. BVP 815!

Hi Mary,

There must be more than one edition as my copy definitely has XOV 555 driving round Brands piloted by Rick Bourne. I bought the book in the early 90’s from Rick. :OO:

Regards

Richard.

Hello all- don't know if it helps you but KUY in those days would have been a Bristol registration; bought new from (was it) Stapletons, perhaps?

What makes you think it was ordered from Stapletons?

I recall the car, it was owned I think by Fred Campbell but raced by Tom – yes it was quite mod’d for the period probably as Leigh says to the current class B spec.
Fred also did a couple of MGCC Wiscombe Hillclimbs in it, though cannot recall what years.

Did Fred have a big shunt in it at Oulton Park in his first race?
