good avice

Post by peter rafter »

apologies for wrong posting to "on track"--be 4 leigh corwects me i am posting this on loose talk! s0

David Nobbs - he of "Reginald Perrin" and "A bit of Do" fame recounts his early posting in Germany as a national service recruit and his first encounter with the RSM ( Regimental Seargent Major -- a figure to be feared & obeyed , but who also occasionally showed human lapses) -

RSM spoke to me
"SEX"
"The frauleins ere is not always as clean as our lot is an i dont want you to go to the red light district!

How will you know how not to go to the red light district?

Do not go on the number 18 bus!

If you do go on the nubmber 18 bus do not get off at the first stop after the railway bridge!

Do not go into the 3rd house on the left!

If you feels "urges"---an even I feels urges----go to the athletic track and run the 880 yards!

If its a bad urge --run the mile!

during the next year he recalls he ran many miles!

Peter,
You are, of course, much too young to have indulged in National Service, and probably never had to decipher non-com speak. A friend of mine relates a story of a group of 'sprogs' attending a compulsory education class chaperoned by a grizzled Sergeant Major. While awaiting arrival of the officer the SM announced that Mr. 'Whatever' would be giving them a talk on Keats, adding I don't suppose any of you know what a Keat is!!!

Jack,
A word of warning, as an ex-military man you should be aware that I am trained to kill!!!

Have you ever bayoneted a straw dummy, passed out as a 'Marksman' with a Bren Gun, been found competent with a .303 Lee-Enfield rifle?

I was praised for my skill in finding a good sniper position, and my ability to strip and reassemble the aforesaid Bren Gun.

Oh! I can also service the radio on a Vampire Trainer Jet.

Her Majesty can rest easy on her Jubilee with men like me around her.

Of course my warrior days are behind me, and I haven't actually strangled anyone for sometime, but ...................................!

Cheers,

Bob.

Jerry,
I will not be holding a formal parade and inspection, but I would expect all personnel to uphold the ancient and honourable traditions of Morgan pilotes in terms of dress code. Naturally drivers of other marques can hardly be relied upon to conform to the high standards of Malvern types, however, shiny shoes must be a given around the paddock!

Because this is not a full 'Ceromonial' occasion medals should not be worn, as in my case the weight is quite tiring!

I look forward to renewing your acquaintance, and perhaps, capturing your image for posterity.

I salute You, Sir!

Leading Aircraft Man

Bob.
