Hi:
Would it be possible to post more of the magazine article or is it there and I can't find it.
Good luck with the sale.
Thanks, Larry.

Hi Mary:That would be lovely. my email is larry@pippa.ca
I look forward to reading the full piece and anything else you can send along. There can't be many more significant Morgans still in existence than VCR. Too bad the original engine has gone missing, but I'll bet it's out there somewhere, it's significance unknown to whomever has it.
Cheers and good luck with the sale.
Larry

Hi Mary,

Just clicked on your link to the sale of VCR.

Interesting to see the engine number was TS1ME

The original engine in my 1952 ex: works car KUY 475 was originally VT01ME

Cheers

Mark

That's interesting. Was it a Standard Vanguard?

According to Jake Alderson the first Triumph TR2 engine built to Morgan specification, numbered TS1ME (TS being Triumph Sports and ME being Morgan specification Engine) was originally fitted to T3000 (aka P3000). Peter Morgan was keen to fit a TR2 engine to his works Plus 4, KUY 387, so he arranged to swap engines with P3000 in January 1954, thereby transferring TS1ME to KUY 387. In addition Peter had KUY 387 converted to cowled radiator front end at the same time. In return P3000 received the experimental Vanguard engine Peter had been using in KUY, numbered X540E, which dated from 1952 and had been factory built by Standards to give more power than the normal Vanguard engine, but much less power than the future TR2.
So the ME suffix denotes Morgan specification engine.
Unfortunately when we bought the car in 1970 it only had a Vanguard engine so neither of the really interesting engines were present.
A typical Morgan tale!

Hi Mary,

Yes my Morgan KUY 475 and also 474 and 476 were originally fitted with Vanguard engines in early 1952. As was KUY 387 whose chassis number was between mine and KUY 474.

When the three Plus Fours (KUY 475, 474 and 476) were entered by Standard Triumph in that years Rallye des Alpes they were all fitted with twin SU carburettors and rev counters. It's thought Standard Triumph were doing early trials of what was to become the TR2 engine.

In the rally all three Morgans succumbed to not engine problems but their wheels falling off...!

Peter Bolton the Leeds Morgan agent and multiple Monte Carlo and Le Mans driver who was driving my car telexed back to the factory saying "all three Morgans reverted to type"...! ie. three wheelers!

Apparently George Goodall was not amused and even suggested he might take the agency off Peter!

Cheers,

Mark
