Alloy wheels for 4/4

Post by john bevan »

Hi- I have Rostyle steel wheels on my 4/4 4 seater but I think I may be able to save a lot of weight with alloy wheels. Does anyone know of some nice 15" alloy wheels that will fit on a 4/4 from 1979? All tips gratefully received!!

see you at Bentwaters,

Hi John,

Surprisingly there is not a huge amount of weight difference between Rostyles and Minilites (the only readily available alternative). Unless you have some special fancy alloys made up especially - you may save a few lbs but cost ££££s.

Simpler alternative is to pump up your tyres with hydrogen :D

Or ditch the front calipers and fit HiSpec Alloy ones.

Cheers

thanks tim.

I could also stop drinking beer, to lose weight, but I fear that would be to extreme!!!!
I will investigate calipers later in the season,

I'm pretty sure VW Beetles (the proper ones not the new things), have the same PCD as a Morgan, not too sure about the offset thow, there are loads of alloys on the market for Beetles but i'm not sure you'll get a weight saving by swapping from your Rostyles.

Heres a link to some bug wheels :-

Jim is quite right the VW Beetle (4stud) PCD’s are the same as the Morgan
Beetles originally fitted with 4 ½ “ width rims and the offset is wrong, but it was a cheep way of getting the right centres (which are exceedingly strong, have not broken one in 25 odd years which is more that I can say for the standard Morgan rim) taking off the rim and having a new 5 ½” rim welded on with the right offset.

They then fitted the Rostyle style which was 5 ½” and was the right offset and used by Morgans.

The VW specialists also now do a standard 5 ½” rim, but I have not yet checked out what the offset is??

As to weights my 5 ½” rims (original 4 ½” modified with a new rim) weigh in at 18lbs each without a tyre, and I think that the Rostyle’s are slightly heavier, though I have never actually weighted one.

As to comparative weights I have a set of early Revolutions (nor for sale) with a 6” rim width which weigh in at 13lbs. So alloys can give a weight saving but it does depend very much upon the make of wheel - Minilites dont seem be very light these days? must be the alloy they use.

One other source is to look on e-bay for I have seen some excellent bargains.

Hope this helps
Barry

Compomotive MO or MLs are very good, light, well priced and cool.
