Following the discussions regarding the merits/dislikes of Curborough in the Sprinting and Hillclimbing forum entitled Rookies and Racers, I would like to conduct a quick poll.

Proposal:

How many people would be interested in competing on a drag strip? - "run wot you brung" type event - Morgan Only at say Santa Pod or Shakespear County Raceway?

Benefits:
Centrally Located
Wide track
No bends
Good spectator viewing
Cheap
Day Licences available

Disadvantages:
Diffs may suffer
May be addictive

If enough interest is forthcoming, It may well happen.

They used to run sprints at Santa pod, with a chicane in the middle, my dad won with a team of Morgans back in his youth !!

I've been saying for years it would be a great venue to hold the annual "Morgan weekend".

Jim – That may have been my one of my first events – around 1970. Not sure about the ladies clothing but I was in my ‘flower power’ orange 4/4 and probably wearing clothing to match !

A bit more info to whet the appetites...

All you need to compete in a Drag Race is a suitable vehicle. It will be checked for safeness by the raceway's scrutineering crew, seatbelts, suitable clothing (Not even race suits - just arms and legs covered), a valid driving licence, MOT, insurance and a crash helmet if your car is an open top or runs quicker than 11 second quarters or faster than 100 mph.
General raceway admission for Public Track Day RWYB's is £10 per person of £20 for a weekend pass. Track fee is £20 per day of £35 for a weekend of unlimited runs or at least until the fuel runs out, and there's no pre booking needed or over priced circuit fees either, just arrive at the track and the Raceway Staff will take care of the rest.

Leigh - this is strictly 4/4 territory. The Flying Duster will be making track appearances next year in the HSCC and anything else I can get entries to.

When I was there they were also doing the odd run in a top fuel dragster - awesome!
Merc surprisingly fast but you can't beat physics - all that weight makes it too slow off the line.

get there early.
early runs are about 10-15mins apart.
after 11am it got to about an hour and a half...
worse than waiting around at sprints

I have now turned up the results from the Morgan Club sprint held at Santa Pod in the olden days with such stars as John Lindsay, Rob Wells and myself and the winning times were about 0.3 sec slower than those listed on John Bevan’s link.

Ie About 14.8 for the +8 and 16.5 for the four cylinder cars. I don’t know how modified the cars were.

I was about 18 secs in standard 1969 4/4 four seater.
